The Best Beaches on Vancouver Island

The west coast of British Columbia may be frigid most of the year, but the beaches are always gorgeous. When the sun does come out and you can catch a tan, even better. Here are the top 5 best beaches on Vancouver Island for strolling, catching sunsets, kayaking or throwing a frisbee. Rain or shine, the nature of these beaches is breathtaking. 5) McIvor Lake, Campbell River

Didn’t think a lakefront beach would make this list? Think again. McIvor Lake near Campbell River has stellar beaches that are popular with families. There are at least three beaches bordering this lake, which gives enough room to play games, stretch out to tan, go swimming or fishing.

4) Schooners Beach, Tofino

A lovely boardwalk trail opens out to Schooners Beach, which is why I love this spot in the Tofino area. The walk through the lush green rainforest full of ferns is breathtaking itself, but when you reach the wide open stretch of white, sandy beach, you may be even more amazed. Sift through the sand, jump over ocean waves and find colourful sea stars on the rocks. This beach is very secluded and makes the long drive to Tofino worthwhile.

3) Miracle Beach, Black Creek

When I visited Miracle Beach, I stayed at the adjacent campsite. With just a short walk across the main road, you will arrive at the beachfront. Get ready for a gorgeous view of a mountain range across the ocean. Bring some drinks and sit on a huge piece of driftwood, throw a frisbee and take in the crazy views of the mountains.

2) Ella Beach, Sooke

The beautiful Ella Beach was a surprise find on a camping trip. Nearby the town of Sooke, the beach is accessed by a dead end road with limited parking. Sunsets from the rocky beach are stunning! Many people were building fires and enjoying the beauty of the area from this small, more private beach.

1) China Beach, near Sooke

I loved China Beach so much, I visited it twice on a recent trip. There is a camping area and a day use area. China Beach is a pebbly beach with large driftwood that are great for sitting on, or even falling asleep on. The views of the ocean here are amazing, especially during sunrise and sunset.
